Top Halloween Safety Rules

1. Always inspect your kids candy. It may seem like common sense, but every year we hear of cases where children were hurt due to somebody tampering with Halloween candy. Don't allow your kids to eat baked goods or fresh fruit they may have received. Only allow unopened and sealed candy to be eaten by your little ones.

2. Never run from house to house and always use the sidewalk. Especially at night, there are hidden dangers from lights, wires, landscaping and terrain that children may trip over while trying to get to the next door.

3. If you are driving children from house to house, be sure they always get out on the curbside of the car. Never allow them to exit the vehicle into the open road.

4. Never go into a strangers house. If someone asks them to come in the door while they get some more candy, don't allow them to go in - just move on!

5. If trick or treating at night, always carry a flashlight of some sort, or place reflective tape on your child's goodie bag.

6. Be sure to dress for the elements. If you are wearing a light costume this year, buy it large enough so a sweatshirt of jacket can be worn underneath to protect you from bad weather.

7. If accessories like hats, wigs, masks or anything else will be worn on the face, be sure that they are a snug fit and won't fall down over the child's eyes, blocking their field of vision while they are walking.

8. Don't bring your pets with you when you go trick or treating. The mysterious and strange costumes may frighten and cause distress to the animals. Alternatively, put your animals in another room when trick or treaters come to your door.

9. Halloween swords, knives, magic wands and other props should be made of plastic, cardboard or other harmless material that is safe for children to handle. Never allow anyone to carry real weapons when trick or treating.

10. If a child is wearing a full size mask, ensure that it fits properly. It should not wiggle too much, and there needs to be ample breathing room and room to be able to see clearly. You may want to put moisturizer on their skin so it does not dry out as those masks can get warm and sweaty when worn.
